Teaching Reflection

Being in the classroom for the observation periods was an enriching and exciting experience that not only helped me to observe teaching strategies but also helped me to consider my own personal teaching strategies, style, and philosophy. Observing also allowed me to realize the need for deliberate and intentional planning for quality instructions, student engagement, and classroom management.

Impactful Learning Moments

Balancing Authority and Approachability

The teacher's ability to command attention with a gentle yet firm approach created an environment where children felt encouraged to participate. This revealed that classroom management is about mutual respect and relational presence rather than strict control.

Constructive Learning from Mistakes

When faced with incorrect answers, the teacher skillfully transformed them into learning opportunities, demonstrating that mistakes are valuable parts of the learning process.

Clear Learning Objectives

The practice of clearly stating learning objectives at the beginning of each lesson helped frame the children's minds and set clear expectations for the learning journey.

Diverse Teaching Strategies

The mix of strategies including direct instructions, open-ended questions, and hands-on activities catered to various learning styles, highlighting the importance of educational flexibility.

Impact on Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy has been sharpened through these classroom observations. I continue to believe that every child is capable of learning as long as they are supported, challenged, and encouraged, and given the right tools and environment. They must also be active participants in constructing their knowledge.

I am made more aware that being a great teacher is not incidental, but results from being consistent and exercising care for the development of children both physically, academically, and personally. I am challenged to think about the type of teacher I will be, the quality of knowledge that I will share, and the lifelong impact I will have on these young children.
